Nantes University Hospital

In the privacy of hospital rooms, art becomes a breath of comfort. The "À la belle étoile" project transforms the care space into a place of calm and escape, where nature and light interact with intimacy. Designed to offer a moment of respite, these artistic rooms re-enchant the daily lives of patients and nursing staff. At the Simone Veil Center, artist Izumi Idoia has created a soothing mural in a treatment room and the nursing staff's break room. It is an immersive work that invites serenity and comfort, carried by a soft and enveloping palette. Finally, on one of the walls of the Nantes University Hospital, Docteur Paper has created "Notre Ville Imaginaire" (Our Imaginary City), a monumental fresco composed of 1,500 drawings sent in by participants from around the world. Conceived as a message of hope and gratitude to healthcare workers, it embodies a collaborative project that was born in the midst of the health crisis. These two projects complement the creation of artistic rooms at Nantes University Hospital to improve the stay of patients and the daily life of healthcare staff. This initiative began in August 2020 with a first room in the dermatology oncology department. These artistic rooms, with permanent works painted directly on the walls of certain rooms, corridors, and staff living and rest areas, offer a sensitive and immersive artistic journey. The artists worked with the aim of soothing, creating a sense of escape, reassuring, and brightening up the spaces. People, nature, and color are the common threads running through these creations. Why the room? The hospital room is one of the only places that remains essential to the patient's privacy, where they can rest, receive their loved ones, reflect, relax... it is the patient's private space. This is an opportunity to create a permanent collection of artists' rooms, so that even the nights are creative, artistic, and unusual. The project actively involves hospital staff and patients, who are invited to choose the artistic projects from models, to exchange ideas with the artists, and to take part in explanations and presentations of the works. Each artist working in a room also works on a "reminder" in the treatment room or rest room so that the work creates a link between the privacy of the patient and that of the caregiver.
