Appogiature
In music, there's an ornament with a special flavor, starting with the very word that designates it, from the Italian appogiare: appogiatura. This unexpected note partly takes the place of the appropriate one, not to replace it but to support it. The main note, far from taking umbrage, is exalted by it. Even more astonishingly, this enhancement occurs through a dissonance. In the words of composer Jean-François Zygel, "appogiatura is when you do something other than what you should... and it's beautiful".
Digging even deeper into etymology, Latin teaches us that to lean is to rise: appodiare comes from ad podium, meaning "near a high point" - in the amphitheatre, the platform around the arena.
Finally, this word conceals a veritable life program. Harmony is sometimes achieved through the unexpected, through the success of a project, through the support of a team or partnership. And the word "appogiatura" calls, more than ever, for another: together.
