Windows and Perspectives
"First, I trace on the surface to be painted a right-angled quadrilateral as large as I wish, which acts as an open window, through which the story can be glimpsed in its entirety."[1]
Painting is no longer systematically Alberti's window on history, but it always brings to light new spaces of contemplation. It remains a window, because it opens onto the inner representations of an individual. Images are always part of a particular context. Considerations both personal and communal arearticulatedin the creation and materiality of the work ofart.
This seems to be the case for the year that is drawing to a close. If we wanted to place 2020 in perspective, as we would a given pictorial subject, we'd have to draw a quadrilateral large enough to accommodatethe many obstacles, suspensions and twists and turns of the past twelve months. Ample, then, but rich in relief, invention and creativity.
Let's chart a new course for the year ahead!
